Wimbledon

Wimbledon is one of the most famous tennis tournaments globally, and it is held every year in London, England.

Wimbledon, founded in 1877, is an annual tennis tournament held over two weeks in mid-July at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The event is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass courts.

The main draw comprises 128 players: 48 seeds and 80 qualifiers (including 16 wild cards). Of these 128 players, at least 16 are wild cards, and 8 qualify by right of winning a particular grand slam event (for example, if Federer wins Wimbledon, he will be seeded 1st). The remaining 96 players are drawn from a list of about 1000 ranked players eligible for entry into Wimbledon or through their performance in previous grand slams.

The men's singles champion receives the prestigious title of ‘Wimbledon Champion’ and a gold medal. The women's singles champion gets the title of ‘Wimbledon Champion’ and a silver medal. The two losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals. The prize money for each event has increased steadily over the years to become one of the highest-paying sports events in the world today. In 2015, the total prize fund for both men's and women's singles competitions was $3.3 million each, increasing from £750,000 ($1.48 million) in 2008.

The Wimbledon Championship 2022 is the 135th edition of the Wimbledon Championships. Competition dates: Mon, 27 Jun 2022 – Sun, 10 Jul 2022.
