Art Basel

 

Art Basel is an international art show in three of the most beautiful cities: Miami, New York, and Basel. The art fair was first established in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970 by Swiss gallerists Ernst Beyeler and Trudi Bruckner. They were joined by Balz Hilt, an entrepreneur, and poet. Their idea was to bring together artists, collectors, curators, and art critics. The name Art Basel was chosen simply because “Art” allowed them to showcase any type of work they wanted to show without it being confined by any one medium.

The Art Basel show features contemporary art from over 70 countries worldwide. Artists attend from all over Europe, Asia, and America. In addition to the main event, satellite shows are held at various locations throughout Miami and New York City.

Art Basel Miami Beach is characterized by its high-profile location on South Beach, alongside some of the most famous hotels globally, such as The Delano Hotel or The Setai Hotel. It attracts thousands of international collectors and curators who come together each year to discover new works by emerging artists and established professionals.

The fair offers an extensive program of events, including lectures and panel discussions on topics related to contemporary art. The fair focused on contemporary art from emerging artists in its early days. However, it has become more established over the years and now includes galleries worldwide selling everything from sculptures to paintings to photography.

There are also international museums, such as Tate Modern in London or Centre Pompidou in Paris, which display their work at the event alongside independent galleries worldwide.
